Alabama Golf Courses
Alabama has over 230 golf courses spread across terrain that shifts significantly from north to south. The Gulf Coast around Mobile and Gulf Shores plays flat with salt air and coastal winds, and the area draws visiting golfers looking for resort-style rounds at courses like Craft Farms and Kiva Dunes. Birmingham is the state’s densest golf market, with a mix of public daily-fee courses and long-established private clubs set among rolling hills and hardwood forests. Montgomery has seven courses and serves as the gateway between the northern hills and the flat coastal plain.
The Tennessee Valley around Huntsville and Scottsboro runs cooler in summer, with courses like Goose Pond Colony Resort offering lake views and elevation changes along the Tennessee River. Tuscaloosa, Auburn, and Dothan fill in the middle of the state with a mix of 9-hole and 18-hole layouts, many priced at Economy or Standard levels. Most courses in the state are 18-hole regulation layouts, though a good number of 9-hole courses serve smaller towns.
Spring and fall bring the best playing conditions statewide. Summers are hot and humid, especially south of Birmingham, but tee times stay available. Mild winters in the southern half keep courses open year-round, and even the northern cities rarely close for more than a few days. Green fees remain among the most reasonable in the Southeast, with many public courses offering 18 holes for under $40. Elite-level pricing exists only at a handful of private and resort clubs along the Gulf Coast and in the Birmingham suburbs.
