Arizona Golf Courses
Arizona has more than 320 golf courses, with over 200 concentrated in the Scottsdale-Phoenix metro area. Desert target golf is the signature style: fairways lined with saguaro cactus, sandy washes as hazards, and sharp elevation changes cut into Sonoran terrain. Scottsdale alone has dozens of courses across every price tier, from municipal options like Papago Golf Club in Phoenix to private clubs in Carefree and Cave Creek. Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, and Tempe fill out the East Valley with a heavy mix of daily-fee and retirement-community courses. On the west side, Goodyear, Surprise, and Peoria have grown as golf markets alongside Sun City and Sun City West, where active-adult communities each maintain multiple courses.
Tucson offers a strong collection at lower prices, backed by the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains. Green Valley south of Tucson adds another cluster of courses popular with winter residents. Sedona and Prescott deliver cooler temperatures at 4,500 to 5,500 feet, while Flagstaff at 7,000 feet plays like mountain golf through ponderosa pine forests. Show Low and Pinetop in the White Mountains provide summer-friendly conditions when the Valley floor hits triple digits.
Peak season runs October through April, when Phoenix temperatures sit between 65 and 85 degrees. Summer heat drops green fees sharply, often by half or more, but limits play to early morning. The pricing range is wide: economy 9-hole courses in small towns like Ajo charge under $20, while top Scottsdale clubs reach $250 or more in peak season. Yuma and Bullhead City in the western desert have smaller course clusters that stay busy with snowbird traffic through spring.
