Kansas Golf Courses
Kansas has 274 golf courses, with nine-hole layouts (roughly 149) outnumbering 18-hole courses (about 116). That split reflects the state’s rural character: dozens of small-town country clubs and municipal courses across western and central Kansas keep green fees low and tee sheets open. Steady south winds of 10-20 mph are the defining feature of golf here, and most courses are designed with that reality in mind.
The eastern third holds the bulk of the state’s golf infrastructure. The Kansas City suburbs of Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood, and Lenexa form the densest cluster, with pricing that reaches Premium and Luxury tiers at private clubs in Mission Hills and Leawood. Wichita has the second-largest concentration, with public and semi-private courses across the metro. Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, and Salina each support several courses at moderate prices. The Flint Hills region between Manhattan and Wichita brings tallgrass-prairie terrain with more elevation change than most visitors expect.
West of Salina, the terrain opens into flat, treeless prairie. Courses in Hutchinson, Dodge City, Liberal, and Garden City are predominantly nine-hole municipal tracks where a round with cart often costs under $25. The season runs March through November, longer than neighboring states to the north, thanks to milder winters. Peak conditions fall in April through June and again in September and October, with midsummer heat in the western half pushing afternoon temperatures above 100 degrees. Eastern Kansas stays slightly cooler and sees more rainfall, keeping fairways greener through the summer months.
