Massachusetts Golf Courses
Massachusetts has 471 golf courses, with roughly 221 eighteen-hole layouts and 126 nine-hole courses filling the gaps in smaller towns. The Boston metro has the highest density, where municipal courses like those in Brockton and Stoneham share territory with historic private clubs. The North Shore around Salem, Lynnfield, and Andover adds a coastal dimension, while the South Shore near Hingham, Plymouth, and Kingston runs courses through glacial terrain and cranberry bog country.
Cape Cod remains the state’s primary golf destination. Sandy, fast-draining soil means courses in Brewster, Mashpee, and East Falmouth play firm even after rain. Nantucket supports several courses with ocean views and higher price points. In the western part of the state, the Berkshires around Pittsfield and Williamstown offer mountain golf at cooler temperatures, with many courses dropping below 70 degrees even in midsummer. The Pioneer Valley near Amherst and Feeding Hills has flatter terrain and more affordable green fees.
Pricing spans the full range. Cape Cod and Boston-area private clubs reach Elite and Luxury tiers, while western Massachusetts and many nine-hole courses keep rates in the Economy to Standard range. The season runs April through November, with September and early October offering the best combination of turf conditions and New England foliage. Summer highs in the 80s make midday rounds comfortable, though Cape Cod courses fill quickly on weekends from June through Labor Day.
