Maryland Golf Courses
Maryland packs 272 golf courses into a compact state that spans tidewater flats, Piedmont hills, and Appalachian ridges. About 137 are 18-hole layouts, with another 30 nine-hole courses scattered across smaller towns and older neighborhoods. Montgomery County and Prince George’s County hold the densest clusters, serving the DC suburban population with a mix of elite private clubs in Bethesda and Rockville alongside affordable municipal tracks. Baltimore supports its own concentration, with public courses in the city proper and private clubs in the northern suburbs around Phoenix and Westminster.
East of the Chesapeake Bay, the terrain flattens out. Courses near Easton and along the Eastern Shore play firm and fast on sandy soil, with steady bay breezes adding a links-style challenge. The Ocean City corridor at the coast draws summer vacationers, and several resort courses there charge Premium to Elite rates during peak season. Pricing in the DC suburbs skews high as well, with a significant number of Elite-tier clubs, but Baltimore-area public courses and western Maryland tracks around Frederick, Hagerstown, and the Catoctin foothills offer Standard-range green fees.
The season runs March through November. Summer humidity along the coast and in the central corridor pushes temperatures into the 90s, making early tee times essential from June through August. Western Maryland sits 1,000 to 2,500 feet higher in elevation, keeping conditions cooler and extending comfortable afternoon play. Fall golf is strong statewide, with mid-Atlantic foliage coloring the hillier courses from mid-October into early November.
