About This Course
Va Jo Wa Golf Course takes its name from the Walker family members who built it: Vaughan, John, and Warren. Vaughan Walker, a logging contractor, mailman, and dairy farmer in Island Falls, constructed the first nine holes on what had been cattle grazing land. The course opened in May 1965 with about 80 to 90 members. The front nine runs through a valley alongside Pleasant Lake, with four holes that bring water into play.
Warren Walker designed and built the back nine, which opened in the fall of 1988. Those holes climb upward through the terrain, offering views of Mt. Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak. The New England Golf Guide rated Va Jo Wa the number one public course in 1997. The family still owns and operates the 6,223-yard course, which includes a driving range and serves as the northernmost quality 18-hole option in this part of Aroostook County.
