Minnesota Golf Courses
Minnesota has 482 golf courses, split almost evenly between 231 eighteen-hole layouts and 179 nine-hole courses. That high proportion of nine-hole tracks reflects the state’s tradition of small-town golf, where communities across the prairie and lake country maintain their own affordable courses. The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro supports the highest density, with municipal courses in Minneapolis and Saint Paul keeping rates accessible alongside private clubs in Edina, Wayzata, and Eden Prairie. Suburban courses in Chaska, Prior Lake, Lakeville, and White Bear Lake fill out the ring around the Twin Cities.
North of the metro, the Brainerd lakes region is the state’s golf destination. Resort courses near Brainerd, Pequot Lakes, and Park Rapids play through hilly, glacially carved terrain dense with pine and hardwood. Detroit Lakes, Bemidji, and Alexandria add their own resort options farther northwest. Along Lake Superior, Duluth courses run cooler, with summer highs rarely breaking 75 degrees. In the southeast, Rochester and Mankato offer slightly flatter terrain and a longer shoulder season.
The window for play runs April through October, though northern courses may not open until late April or early May depending on snowmelt. Peak conditions land from June through September, when long daylight hours push last tee times past 8:30 PM. Green fees statewide tend to run at or slightly below the national average, with the Brainerd resort corridor being the main exception during summer weekends. Fall golf through late September offers warm days, minimal crowds, and hardwood color across the central and northern regions.
