Montana Golf Courses
Montana has 94 golf courses spread across the fourth-largest state by area, split nearly in half between 50 eighteen-hole layouts and 44 nine-hole courses. That even split reflects the state’s geography: nine-hole courses serve small towns on the high plains, while the larger layouts cluster around population centers and resort areas. Billings has the most courses in one area, with several public options at Standard pricing. Great Falls and Helena each have a handful of courses on open, wind-swept terrain where the ball carries far in the dry air.
Western Montana plays differently. Courses near Missoula, Kalispell, Whitefish, and Bozeman sit in mountain valleys framed by the Rockies, with pine forests lining the fairways and creeks cutting through the holes. Big Sky supports several resort courses at Luxury and Elite price points, including private communities with limited access. The Flathead Valley around Kalispell and Whitefish is a popular summer golf corridor, with mountain views and temperatures in the 70s and 80s through July and August.
The season is short by national standards. Mountain courses typically open in mid-June and close by late September, giving players roughly 14 weeks. Lower-elevation courses near Billings, Great Falls, and Helena can stretch from late April into October. Summer daylight is a major advantage, with tee times possible past 9 PM in June. Green fees across the state remain reasonable compared to other mountain-state destinations, though the Big Sky resort corridor commands premium rates during peak summer weeks.
