Hay Springs Golf Course

Hay Springs Golf Course is one of roughly 100 to 150 sand greens courses still operating in the United States. The 9-hole layout plays 2,760 yards at par 36 across open prairie terrain in Sheridan County. There is no pro shop, no tee times, and no attendant — players pay on the honor system, with green fees running just a few dollars per round.

The course draws visitors specifically for its throwback character. Sand greens require players to smooth their own putting surface with a drag after each hole, a practice that was standard across rural America before grass greens became the norm. With wide-open fairways and views of the surrounding rangeland, the course rewards accuracy off the tee despite its short yardage.
