New Jersey Golf Courses
New Jersey has 490 golf courses in one of the smallest states by area, giving it one of the highest per-square-mile course densities in the country. The breakdown runs 223 eighteen-hole courses to 68 nine-hole layouts, with the rest at other configurations. Bergen County in the northeast supports a strong county system alongside private clubs in Paramus, Haworth, and River Vale. Essex and Morris counties inland add another dense corridor, mixing historic private clubs near West Orange and Wayne with public courses that stay busy year-round.
Along the Shore, Monmouth and Ocean counties produce a different style of golf. Sandy soil drains fast, keeping courses playable within hours of heavy rain. Farmingdale, Colts Neck, and Middletown are prime Shore golf territory. Farther south, the Pine Barrens create their own category entirely, with sandy waste areas and pine-lined fairways that give courses near Egg Harbor Township and Cape May Court House a feel closer to the Carolina Sandhills than to the mid-Atlantic. The northwestern corner around Sussex County brings higher elevations and cooler conditions, with Crystal Springs Resort anchoring a multi-course complex in the Kittatinny Ridge foothills.
The season runs March through November, with fall consistently delivering the best turf conditions and most comfortable temperatures. Shore courses catch sea breezes that moderate summer heat, but inland courses in the central part of the state can get hot and humid in July and August. Pricing reflects the dense population and high demand: a significant share of courses fall into the Premium, Luxury, and Elite tiers, though municipal courses in Edison, Newark, Scotch Plains, and Toms River keep public golf accessible at Standard rates.
