About This Course

Edgefield Golf Course is a par-3 pub course on the grounds of McMenamins Edgefield, the converted 1911 Multnomah County Poor Farm in Troutdale. The property actually features two courses – a 20-hole and a 9-hole layout – that wind through thickets of blackberry bushes with panoramic views of the Columbia River Gorge. Holes range from just 43 to 84 yards, and the design is said to be loosely inspired by the mythic links described in Michael Murphy’s novel Golf in the Kingdom.

Tee times can be reserved two weeks in advance at the Distillery Bar, though walk-ups are welcome. Club rentals and golf ball purchases are handled at the same bar, keeping the experience informal. Rates run $14-$16 for nine holes and $24-$26 for the full 20-hole loop, depending on the day of the week. The setting on the broader McMenamins campus, with its restaurants, brewery, winery, and hotel rooms, makes it more social outing than serious golf.

Best 9-hole golf courses in America

Nine-hole golf courses built the game in this country. Before the 18-hole standard took hold in the early 20th century, most American courses had nine holes or fewer, and the format worked. A round takes about two hours. The courses are typically more affordable. And some of the most historically significant layouts in the United States never added a back nine. The best 9-hole courses are not lesser versions of their 18-hole counterparts. They are complete experiences with their own character, and many of them are among the most memorable rounds you can play. Historic layouts of New England The Northeast has an outsized concentration of 9-hole courses that date to the 1800s. Highland Links in North Truro, Massachusetts, is one of the oldest courses on Cape Cod, founded around 1892. The nine holes sit on windswept bluffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, right next to the Highland Lighthouse within the Cape Cod National Seashore. The course plays 2,644 yards at par 35, and the exposed terrain means wind is always a factor. Francis Ouimet, the 1913 U.S. Open champion, played an exhibition round here after the original sand greens were converted to grass. Across the water on Martha’s Vineyard, Mink...

Best golf courses for beginners

The easiest golf courses to learn on are the ones that take distance out of the equation. Par-3 courses, executive layouts, and short-yardage 18-hole tracks let new players focus on making contact, finding a rhythm, and finishing holes without spending half the round in the woods. Courses like these exist in every region of the country, and most charge a fraction of what full-length courses cost. The courses below are all listed in the FairwayDB directory, and each one is a legitimate place to learn the game without feeling overwhelmed. What makes a course beginner-friendly A few features separate a good beginner course from one that will frustrate a new player. Shorter total yardage is the most obvious factor. A par-3 course where every hole is under 200 yards removes the need for long irons and woods off the tee. Executive courses with a mix of par-3s and short par-4s add some variety without demanding full driver swings. Green fees also matter. Economy and standard pricing means a new player can get on the course regularly without a major financial commitment, and that repetition is what builds confidence. A driving range on site is another plus, since warming up before...
