Pennsylvania Golf Courses
Pennsylvania has 793 golf courses, one of the highest counts in the country and enough to support city pages in 69 different metro areas and towns. The Philadelphia suburbs account for the heaviest concentration, with courses spread through Chester, Montgomery, Bucks, and Delaware counties across a full range of price points. The Main Line corridor west of the city holds a particularly high density of private clubs. Pittsburgh’s metro area supports its own deep roster, running through the Allegheny Valley and out toward Latrobe, Greensburg, and Butler.
The wide middle of the state offers a different experience. Lancaster County farmland, the Lehigh Valley around Allentown and Bethlehem, and the college town of State College all provide affordable public golf on open, rolling terrain. The Pocono Mountains draw resort players with cooler summer temperatures, fall foliage, and several destination courses accessible as weekend trips from New York and Philadelphia. Erie in the northwest corner has a small but solid group of courses along the Lake Erie shore, where lake-effect moisture keeps turf green but can bring unpredictable weather.
About 600 courses are 18-hole layouts, with roughly 170 offering nine holes. The season runs April through November in most areas, with mountain and northern-tier courses operating May through October. Bentgrass greens and fairways are standard across the state, performing best in the cooler months of September and October when conditions firm up. Spring can be slow to dry out, especially in valleys. Green fees span a wide range: Economy and Standard pricing is common in rural and mid-state areas, while the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh suburbs push into Premium territory more often.
