Rhode Island Golf Courses
Rhode Island fits 133 golf courses into the smallest state in the country, giving it one of the highest per-capita course densities in America. The split runs roughly 50/50 between nine-hole and 18-hole layouts, with many of the shorter courses serving as neighborhood clubs in the densely populated Providence metro. The compact size means a coastal round near Newport in the morning and an inland layout near Providence in the afternoon are easily combined, with no drive longer than about 45 minutes.
Newport and Aquidneck Island anchor the southern coast with courses that catch steady ocean breeze off Narragansett Bay. The Providence metro supports a solid mix of municipal, daily-fee, and private clubs. Cranston, Warwick, Lincoln, and East Greenwich each have enough courses for dedicated city pages. The western part of the state through Exeter, Foster, and Coventry tends to be more wooded and less expensive, while the southern shore from Westerly through Narragansett adds quieter options near the coastline. North Kingstown and Portsmouth provide good public access on the bay side.
The season runs April through November, with ocean influence moderating both summer heat and early-fall chill. Summers stay comfortable, rarely pushing above 85 degrees, and fall brings the best playing conditions with firm turf and cool air through mid-October. Spring can be slow to warm up, especially near the coast, and courses on exposed headlands can play two or three clubs longer in a stiff onshore wind. Pricing is moderate for the Northeast, with most public courses falling in the Standard range and a few private coastal clubs sitting higher.
