South Carolina Golf Courses
South Carolina has 423 golf courses, with the heaviest concentration along the coast. The Grand Strand around Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, Pawleys Island, and Little River accounts for a large share of the total, and competition among courses there keeps daily-fee rates lower than comparable resort markets. The area has city pages for seven coastal towns, making it easy to find courses by location. Hilton Head Island and the Bluffton-Okatie corridor in the Lowcountry offer a different coastal experience, with plantation-style courses routed through live oaks and salt marsh. Kiawah Island near Charleston holds several high-profile resort courses at Premium and Luxury price points.
Inland, the picture changes. Columbia, Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson provide courses at lower prices, with the Upstate foothills near Greer and Easley offering some relief from coastal summer heat and humidity. Aiken has its own cluster of courses in the western Midlands. The inland courses tend to fall in the Economy and Standard pricing tiers, making them a solid value. About 310 of the state’s courses are 18-hole layouts, with the remaining 70-plus offering nine holes or par-3 configurations.
The mild climate supports nearly year-round play along the coast and in the Midlands. Summer afternoons from June through August bring high heat and humidity, with afternoon thunderstorms common enough to make morning tee times the safer bet. Bermuda grass dominates fairways statewide, performing well in the heat but going dormant in winter. Spring and fall deliver the best conditions: moderate temperatures, low humidity, and firm turf. Many Myrtle Beach courses offer their most aggressive pricing in January and February, making offseason travel a budget-conscious option.
