South Dakota Golf Courses
South Dakota has 139 golf courses spread between the Black Hills in the west and the prairie flatlands to the east. A significant share are nine-hole layouts serving small communities across the central and western prairie, where towns like Bison, Lemmon, and Murdo each maintain a simple, affordable course for a few hundred residents and passing travelers. These economy-tier tracks often charge $20 or less for nine holes and operate with minimal staff.
The Black Hills region around Rapid City and Spearfish offers a completely different experience. Courses there play through ponderosa pine forests at elevations near 5,000 feet, with thin air adding carry distance. Spearfish Canyon Golf Club and Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City represent the high end, with luxury-tier fees and layouts stretching past 7,000 yards. Central South Dakota holds one of the state’s most distinctive courses in Sutton Bay, a private links-style layout on the Missouri River breaks above Lake Oahe.
On the eastern side, Sioux Falls anchors the busiest golf market. Prairie Green Golf Course plays over 7,100 yards on open terrain, and the city supports multiple municipal and private options. Aberdeen and Watertown provide additional 18-hole courses in the northeast. Wind is a constant factor on every prairie course, making club selection and trajectory control essential skills. Most courses open in early May and close by late September, with July and August offering the warmest conditions. Pricing statewide runs well below national averages, with the majority of public courses in the economy or standard range.
