Tennessee Golf Courses
Tennessee has 306 golf courses divided across three distinct regions. The eastern third rises into the Great Smoky Mountains, where courses around Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Knoxville play through dense hardwood forests with serious elevation changes. The Gatlinburg Golf Course in Pigeon Forge is one of the most popular mountain tracks, and Knoxville supports a strong mix of municipal and private clubs. Chattanooga adds several courses in the Tennessee River valley near Lookout Mountain, and the Tri-Cities area around Kingsport and Bristol serves the far northeast corner.
Crossville on the Cumberland Plateau clusters over a dozen courses at moderate elevation, many tied to retirement communities and state parks. The Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain, part of the Tennessee Golf Trail managed by state parks, draws players from both Nashville and Knoxville along the I-40 corridor. Nashville itself has a deep roster of courses ranging from public tracks like Gaylord Springs and Percy Warner to private clubs in Franklin, Brentwood, and Murfreesboro. Memphis anchors the western end of the state with courses on flat Mississippi River delta terrain, including TPC Southwind in the Southwind community.
Most courses stay open March through November, with some in the milder western half playable year-round. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, when temperatures settle in the 60s and 70s. Summer humidity in Memphis and Nashville pushes afternoon rounds into uncomfortable territory, while the mountain courses around Gatlinburg stay noticeably cooler. Pricing varies widely: Crossville and many rural courses offer economy and standard rates, while Nashville and Memphis support premium and elite-tier private clubs.
