Virginia Golf Courses
Virginia has 400 golf courses running from the Atlantic coast to the Appalachian Mountains. Northern Virginia’s Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties hold the densest concentration, with courses serving the Washington, D.C. commuter population. Green fees in this market skew higher than the state average, and both public and private options are plentiful in Alexandria, Gainesville, Haymarket, and Clifton. Fredericksburg, about an hour south of D.C., offers a second cluster at more moderate pricing.
Williamsburg is the state’s resort golf center. Golden Horseshoe Golf Club at Colonial Williamsburg and Kingsmill Resort anchor the area, and several community courses in the surrounding area add depth. Richmond and its suburbs in Chesterfield, Glen Allen, and Midlothian support a solid municipal and private club scene in the central part of the state. Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and the Hampton Roads area provide coastal courses where ocean breezes and milder winters allow play well into December.
The western half of the state plays very differently. Courses in the Shenandoah Valley around Harrisonburg and Staunton feature mountain views and cooler summer temperatures, with layouts following the terrain between the Blue Ridge and the Alleghenies. The Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs and Wintergreen Resort near Charlottesville represent the high end of mountain resort golf. Roanoke and the New River Valley around Blacksburg offer affordable daily-fee options at elevation. The season runs March through November across most of the state, with year-round play feasible in the Tidewater region and occasional winter closures limited to the mountain courses above 2,000 feet.
