Washington Golf Courses
Washington has 292 golf courses split by the Cascade Range into two different climates. West of the mountains, the Seattle-Tacoma metro holds the largest concentration. Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, and Tacoma each support multiple public and private clubs, and Chambers Bay in University Place put the region on the national golf map. Bellingham and the San Juan Islands area add courses in the far northwest, while Olympia and the Kitsap Peninsula around Gig Harbor and Port Orchard fill out the Puget Sound golf scene. Mild temperatures keep most western courses playable year-round, though winter rounds often mean rain and soft conditions.
East of the Cascades, the climate flips to dry and continental. Spokane is the eastern hub, with a mix of well-maintained municipal tracks and private clubs. The Tri-Cities area around Kennewick and Richland and the Yakima Valley add courses in irrigated desert and agricultural terrain, where firm, fast-running fairways are the norm. Gamble Sands in Brewster and courses in the Walla Walla wine country draw traveling golfers to more remote parts of the state. Eastern green fees typically run $20 to $40 less than comparable Puget Sound courses, making it a better value market.
The eastern half operates on a seasonal schedule from April through October, while western courses stay open year-round. Summer is the prime window statewide, with eastern highs in the 80s and 90s and western highs in the mid-70s. Vancouver in the southwest corner plays in the Portland, Oregon market and adds a handful of courses across the Columbia River. Cle Elum and Leavenworth near the Cascade passes offer mountain golf between the two climate zones.
