Wisconsin Golf Courses
Wisconsin has 582 golf courses, giving it one of the highest per-capita course counts in the Midwest. Milwaukee and its suburbs anchor the southeast corner, with the county park system maintaining affordable municipal tracks like Brown Deer Park, Dretzka Park, and Currie Park. Private and upscale daily-fee courses fill the surrounding communities in Menomonee Falls, Mequon, Hartland, and Oconomowoc. The Kohler area along Lake Michigan draws destination golfers to Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits, while Erin Hills near Hartford adds another high-profile venue west of Milwaukee.
Madison supports a strong mix of public and private courses and is well connected to the Wisconsin Dells resort area, where vacation golf picks up in summer. The Fox Valley around Green Bay, Neenah, and Oshkosh has a dense cluster of courses, and La Crosse along the Mississippi River bluffs offers hilly terrain that differs from the flatter eastern part of the state. Door County north of Green Bay draws summer visitors to courses set among cherry orchards and Lake Michigan shoreline, with Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay providing the main options.
The Northwoods around Minocqua, Eagle River, and Hayward offer vacation golf in pine-forested lake country, where courses are often attached to resorts and campgrounds. Nine-hole courses are common in the Northwoods and the smaller communities across the central part of the state, including Stevens Point, Wausau, and the Rapids area. The season runs mid-April through late October, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s. Lake Geneva and Fontana in the far south draw Chicago-area golfers for weekend play, and Kenosha and Racine along the Illinois border provide additional options in that corridor. Pricing is generally moderate statewide, with the Kohler resort courses as the clear exception at elite-tier fees.
